History of Fisher Island:
Where The Standard Was Defined
There are certain places in real estate that shape how an entire industry defines excellence. Fisher Island is one of them.

Spanning 216 acres just off the coast of Miami Beach, Fisher Island traces its origins to 1925, when Carl G. Fisher traded the island to William K. Vanderbilt II in exchange for a 265-foot yacht. Back then, it was merely a secluded barrier island covered with mangroves and native vegetation.

The Transformation
​
The transaction reflected the extravagant culture of the Roaring Twenties and the extraordinary wealth flowing into South Florida during the land boom era. Vanderbilt transformed the property into a private family retreat and gathering place for some of the most prominent figures of the time, including Winston Churchill, the Prince of Wales, and members of the Astor and DuPont families.

In the decades that followed, Fisher Island evolved into an ultra-private residential enclave unlike any other in the country. During the island’s formative years of residential growth and operational refinement, Black Briar’s founding executives were instrumental in helping establish the anticipatory service standards and hospitality-driven management culture that would come to define modern ultra-luxury residential living.

A visionary innovator in luxury residential communities, Mark has more than 20 years of experience leading luxury residential communities. Before launching Black Briar, he served as founder and president of Marquis Association Management, South Florida’s leading provider of luxury condominium management services, which he later sold to Associa, the nation’s largest privately held community management company.

Prior to rounding Marquis, Mark was Chief Operation Officer of CSI Management Services, a commercial and luxury residential property management company. In addition to his corporate duties, he is a strong community advocate and has served on the executive board of Mount Sinai’s Medical Center, as well as the board of directors for the Steven C. Bandan charitable Foundation. Mark is also an FBI Citizens Academy graduate and strong supporter of law enforcement.

Chief Executive Officer, Managing Partner

Joshua Tomey is the Chief Operating Officer and a Managing Partner of Black Briar Management, where he leads operations, development advisory, and service programming across a growing portfolio of high-end residential, mixed-use and hospitality anchored properties and related businesses. His work - spanning from Miami to the Middle East - centers on elevating developer and community performance through disciplined operations, analysis, hospitality-driven service design, and deeply informed pre-development support.

Joshua brings more than twenty years of experience in luxury real estate management, development, and hospitality. Before co-founding Black Briar, he served as Vice President and Executive Director of Marquis Association Management, a leading provider of luxury condominium management services, where he oversaw operations for many of the South Florida's most notable condominium associations. He also acted as principal development consultant for Marquis, directing multiple major asset launches and interfacing closely with national development partners. Earlier in his career, Joshua held senior operational roles with CSI Management Services and Four Seasons Hotels and Resorts.

He holds a B.S. in Accounting from Seton Hall University and an M.B.A. in Finance from Rutgers University. He also maintains his license as a Certified Public Accountant.

Prior to joining the team, he served as SVP of operations for Associa, a leading homeowners association management company with over $1 billion in annual revenue.
Craig has decades of experience in c-suite roles at major companies, including vice president of Staples Shared Services, director of finance for both The Wall Street Journal and Barnes & Noble, and senior executive positions at Dow Jones. He holds a B.S. in Accounting from Seton Hall University and an M.B.A. in Finance from Rutgers University. He also maintains his license as a Certified Public Accountant.
Outside of work, Craig’s passions include deep sea fishing, boating, golfing and music. He and his wife, Michelle, enjoy spending time on the lake and traveling with their two grown children.
